Adventure Review: The Demonplague

Hello friends! Today I've got my second-ever product review, though this time it's not from the DMs Guild. I'll be reviewing The Demonplague , a level 1–20(!) adventure module published by Roleplaying Tips . They were looking for reviewers and I happened to see their call, so I thought I'd give it a shot! Now, I know I just laid out a reviewing structure the other day when I did my first review , but now I'm going to completely abandon it, at least for today. After working on today's review, I realized that what I laid out before might not work so well for an adventure module, so I'll reserve it for non-adventure DMs Guild content and do something else for adventures. Here's how this will go: I'll describe what sort of product it is (like being a 20-level adventure, etc), then I'll talk about some of its contents and what I liked or didn't like, and finish with an overall opinion of the work as a whole. Ready? Let's go! What is Th...

DMs Guild Review: The Magician Class

Hello, everyone! Recently I promised more content besides just Newbieville session summaries, and today I deliver on that promise! I'm going to be (regularly, I hope) reviewing products on the DMs Guild created by small, independent creators. Today I just scanned the "most recent products" listing for something interesting. In the future, I might dig deeper for undiscovered gems, but more than that I'd like to review things by request. So if you know of an RPG product (DMs Guild or not) that you'd like to see reviewed, let me know in the comments or on social media! Since this is my first review, I'd like to lay out my plan for how I'll do my reviews. This may change over time, but I wanted some sort of framework in place before beginning. I'll be rating each product according to the following categories: Concept — What does this product promise to be, and is that promise exciting? Is it something that fills a needed gap or does something cool ...

Behind the Design: LAUNCH

I know a lot of the content on this blog so far has been heavily skewed toward D&D , but that's far from the only game I play, or even work on. This past weekend I participated in a "game jam," in which designers are given a fairly specific prompt and must design and publish a game within specified parameters before a very short deadline. Given that this was the first game jam I've ever participated in, I think laying out my process and experience might make for an interesting blog post. (And if not, let me know in the comments, and I can avoid doing this type of post in the future.) So, as I said, this was my first jam. Certainly not my first game design, but my I've never done a "jam" before. The jam in question was called the Emotional Mecha Jam, which I learned about when Dungeon Commander  tweeted about having created a game called plot ARMOR . I took a quick look and saw that the basic idea of #SadMechJam was to create a game in the "mec...

A Designer's Work Is Never Done

Hello again! I know it's been a while since my last post, which is the result of two things: being very busy, and troubles with getting the Welcome to Newbieville campaign going. Today I'll get you up to speed on what's going on lately, starting with the aforementioned Newbieville D&D  game. Newbieville was supposed to start two Sundays ago. Unfortunately, due to issues ranging from anxious children to scheduling miscommunications, that session had to be canceled. Tried again this past Sunday, and a combination of severe weather, car problems, and work schedule changes resulted in only one player arriving. I mention this because two weeks ago—back when it hadn't been so long since I'd posted—I was planning on having my next post be the big fancy kickoff for Newbieville. After the first missed session, I had a busy week, and figured that it would still make a good next post while being only a little late. Then this past Sunday happened, and Newbieville still ...
