Newbieville: The Fire and the Swamp

Hello again, friends! I'm a day late due to all the complications wrought by a week of car trouble, but I'm back with another session summary of the "Welcome to Newbieville" D&D campaign! Not sure what I'm talking about? Check out the beginning HERE. Here's a reminder of the player character roster:

Belwarum — dragonborn sorcerer, hermit background
Tika — elf rogue, outlander background (absent due to illness this week)
Lady Elka — human monk, noble background
Sir Thorin — dwarf paladin, noble background

We left off last time with the party having cleared the dungeon that they found beneath the old shrine in the woods. This week, they returned to town to rest and sort through some of their loot from the dungeon. They also decided they'd like to finally meet the mayor in person (the knowledge of her recent meeting with Lord Davian had left them wary and suspicious), so they stopped in and were allowed a brief audience with her: an orc named Serepta. The meeting was mostly just introductions, after which we fast-forwarded to the end of the day.

Early in the morning, they awoke to a commotion and the smell of burnt bread. The group rushed outside to discover that the local bakery was on fire. Thorin — who was wearing a ring of fire resistance — rushed in to find Stone, a tiefling who worked in the bakery and whom nobody saw among the crowd. Thankfully, the rescue was a success, and the team joined in with the bucket brigade to quench the fire before the entirety of the bakery was lost. No bread in Newbieville for a while.

Once the crisis was past, the team investigated the scene to discover traces of lamp oil inside the ovens, appearing to be the source of the fire. Outside, they discovered booted tracks leading northward toward a swamp. Despite being briefly sidetracked with a bad roll and an encounter with a pair of perytons, the group eventually found a hollow tree concealing the entry to a hideout, whose inhabitants returned just as the party was turning to leave.

The ensuing battle was seven against three, but the three were individually stronger, plus they led with a statistics-defyingly effective blast from a gem of brightness, blinding the entire opposing group (at least temporarily). In the end, three were left alive for questioning, and confessed to having been paid by an unnamed noble (*cough* Lord Davian *cough*) to "cause trouble" in the village and be paid more at a later date once their employer was satisfied. The team brought their prisoners back to town and turned them over to the mayor, explaining everything they knew about the situation (including their suspicions about Lord Davian).

Afterward, since it was getting into the afternoon and two players had enough XP to level up, they called it a day and got up bright and early the next morning to try out a plan they had concocted. They were going to try to kill two birds with one stone: get more potions on the cheap by collecting more herbs from the wilderness, and see if they could intercept a messenger trying to pay the bandits at their hideout. The excursion turned up some herbs (and some hungry giant frogs), and then they waited at the hideout for half the day.

Alas, no one arrived, so they headed home to get started making potions and see if there were any developments from the mayor. They discovered that the prisoners had been killed, occupying the town's first three graves behind the local temple. They were also told that the mayor's secretary had been looking for them to give them a reward, so they have an item on their to-do list for the next morning.

And that's where we left off! Next time, we'll see what direction they want to go after talking to the mayor and/or secretary. We're nearing the endgame!

Until next time, take care of each other, okay?
