Hello very first reader(s), and welcome to the first post of my new blog. My name is Jacob, and I wanted a place to "think out loud," as that helps me sort my thoughts. Also venting is a thing sometimes.

Okay, so what's going to be on this blog? Probably a lot of it will be gaming-related; in fact, my first "real" post will be an example of me thinking out loud as I work on developing a fantasy setting for roleplaying games like Dungeons and Dragons. I might sometimes comment on other games I play or otherwise have thoughts about.

I'll probably also sometimes have thoughts to share on game-adjacent topics, like gaming community issues or topics of similar geeky-ness (like sci-fi movies or anime). Don't be surprised if I also occasionally sprinkle in personal topics, thoughts on society at large, or plugs for the creations of people I care about.

Basically, I don't have a long-term plan for the content, I just know I need an outlet for the stuff that rattles around in my head. Maybe I'll just be babbling into the void, or maybe you readers can find something familiar (see what I did there?) that will make it worthwhile to hang around.

Welcome to Newbieville

Greetings! A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the fact that soon I'll be starting up a new Dungeons and Dragons  game specifically for new players. I'm hoping to put together the group sometime this week, so I've gotta get this thing put together. Time for some more thinking out loud! Okay, like I said before, I'm running a homebrew game in which the PCs will all be fresh new adventurers moving to a small town where they hope to begin their adventuring careers. I've since decided that I'd like the campaign to have a little bit of a "finding a your place" theme. The town (which for now I'm nicknaming "Newbieville") is new and still trying to get established. The players are new to the town and new to adventuring, trying to find their place in life. I figure this means that Newbieville is partially under construction: when the PCs arrive, there's a functioning tavern/inn and a bakery and lots of carpenters and whatnot, but mayb

IRL Loading Screen

Last night's D&D  session did not go as planned. I wasn't entirely prepared, then even what preparedness I did have was thrown out the window about an hour in. Nevertheless, it seemed like the players had a fun time, and I'm not sure they even noticed the loading bar behind my eyes every time they asked a question. Today we'll take a break from the world-building stream of consciousness for an unpacking of a rather unusual (for me) gaming session. First, the backdrop: I'm running a homebrew game for a party of six. They just finished a dungeon and reached 4th level at the end of the previous session. That means they were at a sort of "checkpoint," ready to begin a new adventure arc. Unfortunately, I've been pretty busy and hadn't come up with anything yet. DMs Guild Review: The Magician Class

Hello, everyone! Recently I promised more content besides just Newbieville session summaries, and today I deliver on that promise! I'm going to be (regularly, I hope) reviewing products on the DMs Guild created by small, independent creators. Today I just scanned the "most recent products" listing for something interesting. In the future, I might dig deeper for undiscovered gems, but more than that I'd like to review things by request. So if you know of an RPG product (DMs Guild or not) that you'd like to see reviewed, let me know in the comments or on social media!
